Nancy Olivia Bethany

Nancy Olivia Bethany, 92, of Mount Pleasant, SC, widow of Jesse “Jack” Bethany, died Monday, January 8, 2018. Born on March 27, 1925, in Silver Spring, Maryland, to Charles and Nettie Schell, she attended art school in Washington, D.C, and worked for years as a fashion illustrator in Washington, D.C., and Norfolk, Virginia.
In the course of her husband’s Naval career, Nancy made friends and took an active role in community life in Norfolk, Virginia; Newport, Rhode Island; Panama City, Florida; and here in Charleston. She was a Life Member of the South Carolina Garden Club and served as president of the Melrose Garden Club for three terms. She made significant contributions to enhancing and beautifying her community, including the creation of the neighborhood swimming pool and the design of the entrance sign to the Melrose subdivision. In addition to her creative and community activities, she was a member of Old St. Andrews Episcopal Church, an avid golfer, and a member of Shadowmoss Golf Club.
Nancy is survived by her sons, David Bethany and his wife Jan Merritt of Sullivan’s Island, and Peter Bethany and his wife Nancy Bethany of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren Rachel, Chloe, Eric, Carolyn, and John Bethany.
The family will receive friends on Friday, January 12, 2018, from 4:00 pm-6:00 pm at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant Chapel.
A Funeral Service will be held Saturday, January 13, 2018, at 11:00 am at Old St. Andrew's Parish Church, 2604 Ashley River Rd., Charleston SC 29414. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
