Alexander 'Red' Schilling

November 11, 1927 — October 28, 2015

Mr. Alexander F. “Red” Schilling, 87, widower of the late Paulette Schilling, of Charleston, passed away Wednesday, October 28, 2015. Red Schilling was born on November 11, 1927 in Charleston, SC to the late Alexander F. and Myrtle McGuiness Schilling. He was a plumber and pipe fitter with the Charleston Naval Shipyard. He was a member of the Charleston Rifle Club, American Legion James Island Post 147, VFW James Island Post 445 and Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 421. Red was a Purple Heart recipient and also received many medals from serving in the US Army during the Korean War. He enjoyed bowling, singing, shagging and his Irish heritage. He adored his family and they adored him in return. Survivors include his sister, Shirley Schilling Graham Peeples of Jacksonboro, SC; his son, Alexander F. Schilling, III of Orlando, FL; daughters, Donna Schilling Close of Mt. Pleasant, Karen Schilling Taylor of Moncks Corner, Pankey Schilling Gross of Mt. Pleasant and Ann Petit Hines of Johns Island; his God-child Andie Thomas Ingraham; 8 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren and 3 nieces. Red also leaves behind his dear friends John and Cheri Houston. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Hospice of Charleston and Roper Hospital for their exceptional care. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 31, 2015 at 2pm at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, James Island Chapel with a visitation following the service until 4pm.
