Barry T. Armitage, of Summerville, South Carolina passed away on May 12th.
Barry was born on July 19, 1946 in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. He graduated from high school in Rye, New York and then received a degree in music education from the Crane School of Music, SUNY Potsdam. Barry married his true love, the former Margaret Hall on July 20, 1968. Barry completed graduate work in music education at SUNY New Paltz and SUNY Potsdam. After a brief stint teaching in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, he taught vocal music at Pine Bush High School for 12 years.
In 1980, Barry felt called to the ministry. He attended Denver Seminary, receiving his master’s degree in Divinity. He went on to pastor churches in Kingsley, Iowa; Newport, Vermont; and Laconia, New Hampshire before his retirement from full-time ministry in 2007.
Barry went by many names: Dad, the “Old Man,” Papa, Mr. A, Pastor, and Boris were just a few. These names tell so much about the different roles Barry played during his amazing life. To many he was a teacher, counselor, friend, big brother, performer (he had a tremendous tenor voice), preacher, director, composer, grandpa, dad and husband. He helped students find their voice, many others find their faith, and with Margaret created a family of which he was so proud.
He was predeceased by his parents, Lloyd and Lorraine Armitage. He is survived by his beloved wife, Margaret Armitage of Summerville, South Carolina; son, Ben Armitage, his wife, Jill, and grandchildren, Will and Kiera of Awendaw, South Carolina; daughter, Rebecca Strutt, her husband, Warren of Burlington, Ontario, and grandchildren, Mikaelah and Nathan Ufema; son, Jonathan Armitage, his wife, Laura, and grandchildren, Noah, Aletheia and Sarah of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia; and son, Joshua Armitage, wife, Jessica Harris, and grandchildren, Thomas and Evelyn Lea of Amesbury, Massachusetts; brother, Duane Armitage and wife, Beth; sister, Nancy Renaldo and husband, Robert; brother, Craig and his wife, Kim; and many nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved dearly.
A loving father to Ben, Becky, Jon, and Josh, a devoted husband to his precious Margaret for nearly 52 years, a big brother to Nancy and Craig, and a teacher and friend to so many more, he lived a wonderful and influential life. He shared himself with so many. Now that he has left, we know he is in heaven with his Lord Jesus, reunited with his mom and dad, his buddy UB, and many others. He lives forever, not only in heaven, but also in our hearts and memories.
The family will have a visitation on Friday, May 15, 2020 at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home in Goose Creek, SC, from 5:00 - 7:00 pm, and a funeral service on Saturday, May 16, 2020 at Seacoast Church in Summerville, SC. Due to Covid-19 the services will be streamed to the public via webcasting.
