David Clinton Colebaugh Jr.

David Clinton Colebaugh Jr., 97, of Charleston, SC, passed away on Saturday, May 23, 2015. He was born on Saturday, August 25, 1917, in Altoona, PA, to the late Nettie Claycomb Colebaugh and the late David C. Colebaugh, Sr. Dave grew up in a humble home in Pennsylvania, where education was important. He graduated from Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, PA. After graduation, he worked in the Hercules Powder Plant, in Blacksburg, VA, where he worked on bombs during WWII. After the war, he had a long career in the chemical sales division of Westvaco, which finally brought him to Charleston, SC. He enjoyed traveling for business, with his wife, Dorothy, at his side. Dave was an avid hunter, and always had a deer story to tell anyone he met. His family will remember him as a rock of his family, even at the age of 97. Besides his parents, David was preceded in death by his sister, Marguerite Cook and his brother, William Colebaugh. He will be sorely missed by his loving wife of 75 years, Dorothy Burkhart Colebaugh; three daughters: Carol Battles and her husband, Richard, of Charleston, SC; Nancy Fansler and her husband, Thomas, of Indianapolis, IN; and Judith Westendorff and her husband, Jamie, of Charleston, SC; eight grandchildren: Thomas Fansler, David Fansler, Jeanette Battles Hyatt, William Fansler, Rick Battles, Elizabeth Fansler Kirsch, Jennifer Westendorff Mallard and Jaime Starr Westendorff McBride; 13 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren; a great nephew and niece. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 26, 2015, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, West Ashley Chapel. A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home West Ashley Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Camp Happy Days, 1622 Ashley Hall Road, Charleston, SC 29407. Expressions of sympathy may be viewed or submitted online at www.mcalister-smith.com.
