David Lionel Fleshman

May 23, 1963 — January 3, 2014

Remember when you were young, you shown like the sun… shine on you crazy diamond ~ Pink Floyd. David L. Fleshman, born May 23, 1963, of James Island, SC passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by loving family members Friday, January 3, 2014 after a brief undetected cancer related illness. David was born and raised in Charleston, WV, the youngest of five children. After he graduated from George Washington High School in 1982 he left behind the hills and snow of WV for the sun and sand of Hilton Head Island, SC. It was in Hilton Head where he found the only woman he loved more than cars, his wife of 18 years Janet Boyd. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend, and lovingly known to his family as “crazy” Uncle Dave. He never knew a stranger and this included the Canadian Geese that called his backyard home during each migrating season. If he was not outside with wildlife he would be creating an elaborate decoration for the closest holiday, helping out a neighbor, but most likely you would find him restoring antique exotic cars. The memory of this kind, risk taking, and charismatic man will live on in the stories of his antics that will be told, and retold many times to his grandchildren Elijah, Silas, and baby girl Smoak, and any future grandchildren by the many nephews, nieces, close friends and other family members that knew him. He had many special people in his life that he held close to his heart, and friends he called family. David was preceded in death by his parents A. Lyle Jr and Mary Frances Fleshman, his brother Albert Fleshman III, and sister Frances Gentry. He leaves behind what were his heart and soul in his loving wife Janet Boyd, along with his daughter Rachael Brooks of James Island, his son Tanner and wife April Smoak (KY), sister Ruth with husband Jack Powers (KY), and brother Rick with wife Carla Fleshman (WV). A closed private memorial service was held with family Monday, January, 6th on James Island. As an expression of sympathy the family encourages your shared E-stories and posts at http://www.mcalister-smith.com/book-of-memories/1763654/Fleshman-David/service-details.php and suggests any memorial contributions be sent to a local Hospice or Cancer Research organization of your choice.
