Edith Gertrud Warncke Combs

Charleston-Edith Gertrud Warncke Combs, 89, of Charleston, passed away on Saturday, June 17, 2017.

Edith Gertrud Warncke Combs was born on December 25, 1927 to Emil and Bertha Warncke in Windhoek, South West Africa (now Namibia). She attended schools in Windhoek and matriculated with honors from high school in Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa.

After a brief stay in Germany, she married Ross M. Combs in 1948 and moved to Columbia, South Carolina. She attended the University of South Carolina in Columbia and was employed by the Internal Revenue Service, becoming the first female Revenue Officer in South Carolina. After 31 years of service she retired in 1983 as Auditor in Charleston. She was a member of the French Huguenot Church of Charleston and Ladies Benevolent Society of Charleston.

She is survived by a niece, Gudrun Eisfeld Uerlings and a nephew, Wolfgang Eisfeld and his wife, Gabi Scheich, two grand-nieces and one grand-nephew, all residents of Germany. Her only sister, Margarethe W. Eisfeld, passed away in March 2007.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 24, 2017 at 11 AM at the French Huguenot Church, 136 Church Street, Charleston, SC 29401.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the French Huguenot Church of Charleston or the American Cancer Society, 269 Calhoun Street, Charleston, SC 29401 or at www.cancer.org.
