Ethel Swain Backus

Ethel Swain Backus, 84, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, widow of Phillip E. Backus, Sr., died peacefully at home on Sunday, December 30, 2018.

Born on June 23, 1934, she was a daughter of the late Raymond Regis Swain, Sr. and Ethel Seagren Swain of Sullivanʼs Island, SC. Ethel was a graduate of General William Moultrie High School in Mt. Pleasant and Bon Secours St. Francis School of Nursing in Charleston. She was a retired nurse and formerly worked as a local business owner, travel agent and property manager. She enjoyed traveling, playing and teaching Bridge, and spending time with family and friends. Her family will remember her as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend.

Surviving are her daughters, Teresa B. Morgan, Lori B. (Jeff) Royall; son, Phillip E.(Debra) Backus, Jr.; 9 grandchildren; 10 greatgrandchildren; sister, Nancy S. (George) Jager; brothers, James C. (Brenda) Swain and Leonard A. Swain; and many loving nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Phillip E. Backus, Sr.; daughter, Deborah Carter McGibbon; parents, Raymond and Ethel Swain; and brothers, Robert R. Swain, Sr., Donald S. Swain, Sr., Raymond R. Swain, Jr., David C. Swain, Sr., Gary M. Swain, and Carl C. Swain.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11[00 AM on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at Stella Maris Catholic Church, 1204 Middle Street, Sullivanʼs Island, SC.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to East Cooper Meals on Wheels, East Cooper Community Outreach or American Lung Association.
