George Edmund Lohr, Jr.

February 21, 1938 — March 16, 2018

George Edmund Lohr, Jr., died March 16, 2018, at Sandpiper Nursing Home in Mt. Pleasant, SC. He was 80.

Ed was born in Lincolnton, NC on February 21, 1938, to George E. Lohr, Sr., and Gladys Lackey Lohr. He graduated from NC State College with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and later went on to become a Professional Engineer. He also graduated with a Master of Engineering from the University of South Carolina. He served 2 years in the US Army and worked as an engineer in both private practice as well as the US Navy, where he retired from the Naval Facilities Engineering Command. After retirement, he liked to volunteer in the community, from working election polls to helping at James Island County Park.

Ed had a long-time love of the sea, and enjoyed sailing and teaching his kids to water ski. While boating around the Charleston harbor, he once said to his daughter, “Some people live their whole lives and never see this.” He also learned to fly small planes and drive a motorcycle as hobbies, but sold his yellow Porsche to buy a family station wagon.

Ed had a great sense of humor and often shared the latest joke he had heard. He was also a firm believer in not overcomplicating things, preferring to keep things simple. And he lived the example of finding solutions. For instance, when Hurricane Hugo shredded his aluminum shed to bits, he custom built a new one himself, engineering it in such a way to withstand future hurricanes. This also reflected his engineering mindset, as though it was more than a career but part of who he was. He was frequently looking to problem solve, even problems you didn’t know existed.

Ed is survived by his wife, Faye; two children Gary E. Lohr, and Jennifer Lohr Gross, and son-in-law Joshua D. Gross; and three grandchildren Virginia Lohr, Jackson Lohr, and Caelyn Gross. He is also survived by his sisters Jane Golden and Mary Lohr. He is preceded in death by his daughter, B. Diane Lohr, and his brother, David Lohr.
