Holly Alford Burchett

August 14, 1992 — November 18, 2021

Holly Alford Burchett, b. August 14, 1992, d. November 18, 2021

Dr. Holly Alford Burchett led a dedicated life filled with love. She was surrounded by family and passed away on Thursday, November 18, 2021 at the Medical University Medical Center, where she attended medical school and was a third year pediatric resident. She was 29.

Holly graduated from Clemson University in 2014, summa cum laude with a B.S. in Biological Sciences. She was a member of the Calhoun Honors College, the Alpha Epsilon Delta Premedical Honor Society and a member of Zeta Tau Omega sorority. Holly was the recipient of the Clemson Presidential Scholarship. She was instrumental in starting the University's first Institute for Healthcare Improvement Open School Chapter. After a year in Thailand with CIEE Teach in Thailand, teaching English along with close friend Chelsea Eason, both started medical school at MUSC in 2015. There she met her husband, Hank Burchett. They matched residencies together at MUSC, graduated and married all in the spring of 2019.

Between the lines of her accomplishments was a woman of quiet but fierce determination, resolute in her love of her family and friends, her pursuit of medicine, and her dedication to her husband. She loved to travel, but extended travel took her away from her beloved golden retrievers. Her life was a balancing act and she walked with grace and strength.

Holly leaves to cherish her memory, her husband Dr. Hank Burchett, her mother and step-father Olivia and Mark Eitzman, Florence, SC, father and step-mother Paul Brittain and Rebecca Alford, sister Brittain Alford and her husband Brian Wenzi, maternal grandmother Lucille C. Oliver, sister Blaire and her husband Tom Goodson, brothers Alexander and his wife, Toni Rogers, Patrick and his wife, Alexandra Forrest-Rogers, nieces Helen and Greer Goodson, Elliot Rogers and nephew Tate Rogers, all of Hartsville, SC, and her in-laws, Linda and Sam Burchett and children, Philip, Sam Jr., Charlotte and Thomas, Lexington KY. She was predeceased by maternal grandfather, Claude L. Oliver, paternal grandparents, Paul Brittain Alford, Jr., and Virginia Wilkes Alford of Morton, Mississippi and aunt, Suzanne Alford Zuccaro of Natchez, Mississippi.

A memorial service was held on Sunday, November 21, 2021 at the MUSC St. Luke's Chapel, conducted by Will Malambri. Hank Burchett and Holly's family wish to extend their gratitude to the MUSC Departments of Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine, Oncology, Radiation Medicine, ICU and Dr. Daniel Long for all the gracious care given to Holly. Donations are suggested to the Sarcoma Foundation of America or Hollings Cancer Center in Holly's name.

Arrangements are being handled through McAlister-Smith Funeral and Cremation - James Island, 347 Folly Road, Charleston, SC 29412
