John Robert Toomes, 63, of Mount Pleasant , South Carolina died, Thursday, June 7, 2018 after a long, courageous battle with cancer.
He was born on October 5, 1954 in Greensboro, North Carolina to Arnold and Sara (Brown) Toomes and eventually made Mount Pleasant his home.
A member of Pi Kappa Alpha at Western Carolina University and he an original member of the Billy Lewis Oakhaven Bro-Dome. He worked as a retail District manager in a variety of fields, ranging from children's toys to home decor. John was a lifelong fan of basketball and NASCAR, and enjoyed golfing, running, and making furniture for his loved ones.
He is survived by his beloved wife Nickie, his two sons; Adam Toomes (Catalina) and Kelly Toomes, his two grandchildren; Nikolas and John David, his brother, Jay Toomes (Donna), his sister, Beth Toomes, his sister in-law Arlene Toomes, his brother in-law, Marc LaRoche (Myra) and six nieces and nephews. John adored his family, especially his grandsons, Nikolas and "JD", who brought much joy and laughter into his life the past five years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold J Toomes and Sara B. Toomes and his brother, Richard M. Toomes.
Nickie, Adam, and Kelly would like to thank our friends and family for all their love and support over the years. We would also like to offer a special thanks to the nurses, doctors, and staff at MUSC and Hollings Cancer Center for their care and dedication to John.
The family will receive friends on June 11, 2018 from 5:00PM - 7:00PM with a Rosary being held at 5PM at MCALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 1520 Rifle Range Road, Mt. Pleasant, SC, 29464.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held June 12, 2018 at 10:30AM at Christ Our King Catholic Church, 1149 Russell Drive, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464. A burial will follow at Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens, 1308 Mathis Ferry Road, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the MUSC Foundation/ Hollings Cancer Center, 18 Bee Street, MSC450, Charleston, SC 29425.
