Madge Barbara Connor

February 24, 1937 — March 24, 2014

Connor, Madge Malcan, March 24, Mt. Pleasant, SC, Madge Connor, age 77. Madge Malcan grew up in New Jersey with her Polish-speaking family. As a child, Madge struggled to learn English and had difficulty learning to read. Madge turned that early childhood learning difficulty into a lifelong passion and became a pioneer in helping children with learning differences. Madge married Tony Connor in 1957 and graduated from Temple University with a Masters in Reading. After living abroad and raising her children, Madge became a clinical psychologist with Clarity, the Speech, Hearing and Learning Center of Greenville for over 30 years, serving as director for five of those years. She was an active member of the Greenville Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship. The family is most grateful to the outstanding staff at Franke who cared for her for the past four years. Madge is survived by her children: Stephanie Mignone (Bob) of Charleston, Jeffrey Connor (Jacqueline) of Adelaide Australia, Beth Guest (David) of Nashville, TN, and Kevin Connor of Asheville, NC; her brother Jay Malcan (Marlene) of Richmond, VA, and seven grandchildren. Madge was preceded in death by her best friend and husband of 48 years, Anthony Cooper Connor; her parents, Matilda and Julius Malcan; her beloved sister, Renee Tunison and her infant granddaughter, Allison Katherine Guest. A service of celebration of life will be held at the chapel of Franke at Seaside in Mt. Pleasant on Friday, March 28 at 4pm. Viewing is Friday March 28 from 2-3pm at McAlister Funeral Home on Rifle Range Road, and Reception by the family from 3-4 in the Franke Chapel foyer. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Franke at Seaside Benevolence Fund or Staff Christmas Fund or Clarityupstate.org.
