Margaret McLaughlin Duffy

February 5, 1939 — July 8, 2018

Dr. Margaret McLaughlin Duffy, known to her friends as Peggy, passed away at Bishop Gadsden retirement community on July 8, 2018, at the age of 79 years.

A native of Rutherford, NJ, Peggy received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Villa nova University, a Master of Arts from Columbia University and a Doctor of Education from the University of South Carolina.

Peggy began her career at a U.S. Navy nurse. After leaving the Navy, she taught at several universities in Rhode Island and California. Peggy worked at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) from 1978 to 2000; she was a Professor in the School of Nursing from 1978 to 1991 and received the Golden Lamp teaching award twice. Peggy was also an officer in the U.S. Army reserve; she was called up to active duty during the Gulf War and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.

Peggy was a member of the American Nurses Association, Trident Nurses Association, American Nephrology Nurses Association (including past president of the Palmetto chapter) and the National Kidney Foundation.

Outside of work, Peggy enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She loved reading, watching movies and Broadway musicals, singing Irish songs and traveling, including to Egypt and Ireland.

Peggy is survived by her three children: Bill Duffy (Alicia) of Charlotte, NC; Paul Duffy of Charleston, SC; and Eileen Duffy (Jim Hair) of Hanahan, SC; and three grandsons.

A private family service will be held.
