Raymond Franklin Lippitt

March 31, 1927 — July 24, 2021

Raymond Franklin Lippitt, 94, of Charleston, South Carolina passed away on Saturday, July 24, 2021, while at home at the outstanding Daniel Point senior care facility on Daniel Island in the presence of his caring wife and family and amazing caregiver, Roberta Brown.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of 70 years, his high school sweetheart Eula Mae Lippitt. He is survived by his wife Irene Lippitt, his daughter Deborah Mellillo Reed (Jim, deceased), two sons Robert Gardner Lippitt (Karen) and James Franklin Lippitt, 9 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

He was born on March 31, 1927 in Washington, District of Columbia, son of Mariam Crist and Edward Gardner Lippitt. He was raised in Charleston, West Virginia whereas a multiple-sport athlete during high school he met and fell in love and then married Eula Mae Foster (Kitty) head cheerleader and homecoming queen. Ray had one sibling, his beloved older brother, Ted of Charleston, WV, a WWII hero and devoted husband (wife Becky) and loving father to four wonderful children, all of whom Ray loved very much.

Sports were always of great interest to him. During WW II he joined the Navy where he served and was honorably discharged. He used the GI bill and working as a patent draftsman as support while graduating from George Washington University in Mechanical Engineering and then Law. Living in Bethesda, Maryland, he worked in Washington, DC for Cushman, Darby, and Cushman as a patent attorney until retiring at age 80. He worked as a prosecutor and taught the legal art to many younger attorneys. He loved the creativity of inventing: "the new combinations of old materials". He was an inventor of the N Gage kidney stone extractor, manufactured, promoted, and distributed by Cook Urological which with other technological improvements has transformed the management of kidney stones worldwide. His true passion was working on inventions of the internal combustion engine of which he held 7 patents. He chose not to renew these patents thus making them available for free to the world.

He loved spending time with his family. He had an amazing group of friends through the Bethesda Country Club. He was a season ticket holder and die-hard Redskin fan, famous for yelling at the TV in support of his Redskins during away games. He loved to travel.

He lived an incredibly full life despite 50 years of active painful Rheumatoid arthritis.

A celebration of life will be privately held by his family.
