Robert Arnold Newton

Robert A. Newton (Bob), 85, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away January 9, 2016. Born December 14, 1930 in Wabeno, WI, he was the son of the late Floyd and Clara Newton. He graduated from Wabeno High School in 1948, earned his Bachelor’s Degree in business from Whitewater University and a Master’s Degree from Webster University. Bob joined the Navy following college and was assigned to the Admiral’s Headquarters in Charleston, SC where he met and married his wife of forty-eight years, Miriam Riley Newton. He taught at Palmer College and then opened his own business college (Concede) in North Charleston in 1962. He later became Director of the Manpower Skilled Training. Bob was named Dean of Continuing Education at Trident Technical College in 1971 and retired in 1991. He also served as president of the South Carolina Association of Higher Continuing Education. Upon retirement, Bob volunteered with the St. Vincent De Paul Society, where he served as president. He was appointed president of the St. Vincent De Paul District, which consisted of 10 chapters in the lowcountry. Bob also established the St. Vincent De Paul furniture warehouse at ECCO, which continues to serve approximately thirty families each month. He received the Book of Golden Deeds Award from the Exchange Club in recognition for his community service. Bob was a member of Christ Our King Catholic Church, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister. He also assisted Sister Cyryl in the development of programs for the Senior Ministry Center. In 2009, Bob moved into The Palms Retirement Community. Bob played an active role in greeting new members and developing outside activities for residents. Bob loved Charleston so much he conducted over fifty tours of the city for residents of The Palms. Bob was well known for his love of dancing. He and Miriam won many dance contests over the years. He also had a passion for playing cards, tossing the dice, and other games of chance. Bob is survived by his three sons, Tom Newton (Christel) of Charleston, Danny Newton (Ann) of Mt. Pleasant, and Barry Newton (Sue) of Charleston; four grandchildren, Kathleen, Caitlin, April, and Connor; sister, Delores Uphoff of Wisconsin; sister-in-law, Gen Newton of Mt. Pleasant. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Bob was preceded in death by his wife Miriam Newton; brothers, Buck (Priscilla) Newton, Millard (Betty) Newton, Squirt Newton, and Jim (Vi) Newton. The family will receive friends on Monday, January 18, 2016 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, 1520 Rifle Range Road, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Christ Our King Catholic Church on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at 10:30 AM In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the St. Vincent De Paul Society, c/o Christ Our King, 1122 Russell Dr, Mt Pleasant, SC 29464.
