Robert Ernest Bodman

Robert Ernest Bodman, 90, husband of Ann Herlong- Bodman, passed away on December 17, 2018, at his residence with his family by his side.
Bob was born September 26, 1928, to Ernest Edward Bodman and Aphrodite Erlandson Bodman, at Flowers Hospital in New York City; to parents who had immigrated, his father from England, his mother from Sweden.
Bob graduated from Port Chester High School, NY, and did further studies at the Mechanics Institute in NYC, and Norwalk Technical College in Norwalk, Connecticut. After serving in the United States Army during the Korean War, he joined Homelite Corporation, where he led the design of the XL-12 chain saw, the largest selling chain saw in the world at the time. He continued as chief engineer and designer until 1992, when he retired.
Bob traveled widely after the death of his first wife. One trip brought him to Charleston, where he met and married Ann Herlong-Bodman. He began volunteering at the South Carolina Aquarium and the Charles Pinckney National Historic Site, where he was associate curator. His 19 years volunteering at the Fort Sumter National Monument, gave him the honor of being named the "Dean" of the Fort Sumter Volunteers. Tourists from around the world were charmed by his hospitality, his humor, and his knowledge of local history.
Bob is predeceased by his mother, father, brother, and his first wife, Marilyn Dean Bodman. He is survived by his three sons; Robert Dean (Renee) of Carlsbad, CA; Bruce George (Margaret "Maggie") of Charlotte, NC; and Bradley Edward (Donna) of Baltimore, MD. He leaves three grandchildren, Kelly Willis (Scott), Christopher (Hannah), and Lindsay Bodman; two great-grandchildren, Barrett and Zoey Willis. Bob is survived by his loving wife, Ann Herlong-Bodman; three step-children, Stephen Herlong (Susan) of Sullivan's Island, SC; Candice Pou (John) of Saluda, SC; and Kathryn Penfold (Gregory "Moose") of Tryon, NC. He leaves four step-grandchildren: Grace Herlong, Stephanie Herlong, Phillip Pou (Victoria), Michael Pou, Christy Keisler (Kody), Laura Browne, Robert Browne and one great- stepdaughter, Mickey-Reese Pou.
A celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
