RoseMarie Marcella McLaughlin Godley McCarty, widow of the late Col. Roy D. McCarty, USA, Ret., entered eternal rest Wednesday, January 7, 2015. A graveside service will be held on Friday, July 10, 2015 at 10:30am in Live Oak Memorial Gardens, Ashley River Road. Born Aug. 29, 1928, in Belleville, Ill., she was the only child of Bryan McLaughlin and Elvira Legendre McLaughlin. First married to the late Douglas N. Godley, Sr., she wed Colonel McCarty, former Director of The Citadel’s Physical Plant, in 1975. In 1958, Mrs. McCarty was employed by The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina. A talented writer, she was named Citadel publications editor in 1979. In that capacity, she edited The Citadel Alumni Association’s quarterly magazine and newsletters and was responsible for brochures and other college publications. After 32 years at The Citadel, Mrs. McCarty retired in 1990. She was past president of the Greater Charleston Rotary Club Auxiliary, The Citadel Active Duty and Retired Officers’ Wives Club, and Alpha Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi International Sorority, of which she had been a member since 1948. After retirement, she volunteered at the Gibbes Museum of Art and in the Parish Office of the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist, while health permitted. She was a former member of the Lake Sandhurst Garden Club, the Charleston Garden Club, and the Carolina Womens’ Art Association at the Gibbes. Surviving are her daughter Lorraine Godley Stambaugh and her husband Charles of Virginia Beach, Va., and two sons, David R. Godley, Sr., of Charleston, SC, and D. Norman Godley, Jr., and his wife Carole of Mt. Pleasant, SC. She had nine grandchildren: Bryan D. Stambaugh and his wife Monica of Chesapeake, Va.; Steven G. Stambaugh and his wife Angela of Virginia Beach, Va.; Douglas C. Stambaugh and his wife Kelly of Virginia Beach, Va.; Kathleen Marie Lauro and her husband Robert of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; David R. Godley, Jr., Christina Marie Godley, Norman C. Godley, Rutledge C. Godley, and C. Sumter Godley, all of Charleston, SC. There are four great grandchildren Ila Rose and Evan David Stambaugh of Virginia Beach, Va., and Marcela Maria and Caroline Lister Stambaugh of Chesapeake, Va. Also surviving are three stepsons: Col. Robert T. McCarty, USA, Ret., and his wife Shirley of Arlington, Va.; Richard K. McCarty and his wife Pamela of Richmond, Va.; and William Blake McCarty and his wife Jennifer of Lawrenceville, Ga. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to The Citadel Foundation for the Col. Dennis D. Nicholson, Jr., Scholarship, C/O The Citadel Foundation, 171 Moultrie St., Charleston, SC 29409-6230. A graveside service will be held on Friday, July 10, 2015 at 10:30am in Live Oak Memorial Gardens, Ashley River Road, Charleston, SC.
