Rosemary Stoehr

February 13, 1921 — February 22, 2016

Rosemary Boylan Stoehr, of Charleston and formerly of Manhasset, NY, died peacefully at home early Monday morning, February 22, 2016. An avid watercolorist and rug hooker, Rosemary was formerly a member of the National Art League (Douglaston, NY), and was an active artist in the Charleston community. Her watercolors received numerous awards and hang in homes and offices in South Carolina and New York, as well as in the homes of relatives and friends throughout the United States. Her hooked rugs and paintings are treasured by all who have them. In Charleston, she participated in bridge, Tripoli, and hooking groups, as well as golf, where she enjoyed the company of wonderful friends. She and her late husband were members of the James Island Yacht Club and former members of the Country Club of Charleston. Rosemary attended Adelphi University where she was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She met her husband summering in Mattituck, New York, when she was 15; they married when she was 19; and they remained happily married for 65 years. She leaves behind a legacy of enormous creativity and drive, and her wonderful sense of humor will be missed by everyone who knew her. Beloved wife of the late Edward Woodworth Stoehr, she was a loving mother of Sandra Stoehr Gillette (Langhorne, PA), Bruce E. Stoehr (Charleston) and Nancy, Christopher G. Stoehr (Locust Valley, NY) and Barbara, Laurie Barnoski (Olympia, WA) and Robert, Andrew B. Stoehr (Charleston), Elizabeth Stoehr Gallagher (Raleigh, NC) and Jim; proud grandmother of Brian E. Stoehr (Brooklyn, NY) and Cara, Christopher M. Stoehr (Honolulu, HI) and Kari, Christopher R. Stoehr (Locust Valley, NY), John M. Stoehr (New York, NY), Maximilian J. Gallagher (Raleigh, NC), and Jacob S. Gallagher (Wilmington, NC); doting great-grandmother of Harrison Edward Stoehr, Josephine Rosemary Stoehr, and Madeleine Frances Stoehr (Brooklyn, NY); and devoted sister of Catherine Boylan Joseph (Cutchogue, NY). Rosemary was born in Brooklyn and raised in Mineola, NY. She was the daughter of the late George Boylan and Mary Gertrude Brogan Boylan. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am on Monday, February 29, 2016 at Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, 120 Broad Street, Charleston, SC 29401.
