Shirley K Hudel

Shirley Kenty Hudel 82, of Summerville, SC passed away on Wednesday, August 29, 2018.
She was born on December 22, 1935 in Chicago, Illinois, daughter of the late Robert Brown Kenty and the late Cloyse Cramer Kenty. Shirley graduated from North Dallas High School and attended Southern Methodist University. She married Perry Hudel in 1954 and shortly following would embark on a world tour where Shirley was an active participant in her husband’s 30 year career as a pilot in the US Air Force. It was during those years while stationed at various locations overseas and stateside that she found her passion for volunteerism in both the military and civilian communities, which continued throughout her life. Prior to leaving the Airforce, Shirley and Perry had multiple options as final duty stations and selected Charleston AFB where they determined Summerville would become their permanent home.
Shirley’s greatest loves were her family, friends and church. She was an active member of the First Church of Christ Scientist in Charleston, SC where she chaired several committees. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. Shirley was known for her sincere loving and caring manner, genuine sunny personality and unconditional giving heart. She had a love for gardening and shared that love through her landscape design business, Lowcountry Landscapes. She was an avid sports enthusiast, nature lover and enjoyed time spent at the beach. Shirley will be remembered for her compassion, loyalty and positive outlook that could bring a smile to anyone’s face, friends or strangers alike, no matter the circumstance.
Besides her parents, Shirley is preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years Col. Perry Hudel (in May 2017), her son Drew Hudel (in Nov 2017), her brothers John Kenty (in Dec 2017) Terry Kenty (in May 2009) and great granddaughter Austyn Adair (in June 2017).
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Carol and Doug Tidwell of Mt. Pleasant, SC; daughter-in-law Julie Hudel of Lovettsville, VA; granddaughter Ashton Williams of Asheville, NC; granddaughter Katie Adair (Bobby) of Brunswick, Md; grandson Ben Thrailkill IV (Michelle) of Ashburn, VA; three great grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law Sterling and Nancy Kenty of Dallas, TX; sister-in-law Sharon Kenty of Hampton, GA; cousin Jay Kenty (Denise) of Stevensville, MD; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday September 4, 2018 at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home West Ashley Chapel. The family will receive friends from 12:30 PM until the time of service at the funeral home. Private burial will be at Beaufort National Cemetery.
