Shirley M. Smith

Shirley Marie Corbitt Smith, 88, of Bamberg, SC, passed away on Tuesday, January 9, 2018.

She was born on July 20, 1929 in Suffolk, Virginia, daughter of the late Mary Kirton and the late Edward Corbitt.

Shirley enjoyed spending time with her pets, planting flowers in the yard, and never met a stranger. Her home was always open to anyone and she had a huge heart for anyone in need. She loved her family and found great joy in cooking large Sunday dinners for her children and grandchildren, and expected everyone to be there. Shirley will be remembered as a generous, gentle but firm woman, who was very protective of her family. She was a retired machine operator with JPS Industries in Walterboro and was a previous supervisor with Smoak's Sewing Room and also worked part-time with the former flower shop in Branchville.

Besides her parents, Shirley is predeceased by her husband, Marvin Smith; children: Randy L. Smith, Mary Alice Platts and Sylvia Ann Harrell; and great-grandson, Dillon Smith.

She will be deeply missed by her son, Jody Smith and his wife, Teresa, of Walterboro, SC; two daughters: Marviette "Pie" Hogan and her husband, Mike, of Bamberg, SC and Sheryl Marie Hernandez of Bamberg, SC; 18 grandchildren, and 26 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 13, 2018, from 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM at Open Door Baptist Church, 6933 Main Hwy., Bamberg, SC 29003. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM at the church. Burial will follow at Edisto Baptist Church Cemetery, 4831 Edisto River Rd., Branchville, SC.
