Albert Francis Boll, 91, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, passed away on Friday, September 12, 2025.
Born on April 17, 1934, in Pittsburgh, PA, he was a son of the late Elizabeth H. Boll (Sovek) and Anthony J. Boll.
Al earned a BBA (’56) and MBA (’64) from the University of Pittsburgh. He proudly served in the US Army for almost 30 years, retiring after a highly decorated career at the rank of Colonel in 1984. Al met Anne in Germany, where he was assigned as a young officer and she was a teacher in the American school. They had their first date at the meeting to found the Frankfurt International Ski Club in 1958. During his Army career, among many other highlights, he co-wrote a book, Vietnam Studies Logistic Support, with his boss and friend, LTG Joseph Heiser. The Catholic organization, Knights of Columbus, has called Al “brother” since 1965. With the Knights, he selflessly volunteered his time in their many charitable endeavors, reaching the rank of Fourth Degree. His deep faith was also reflected in his active and founding membership of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in San Antonio, Texas where he and his family found a happy community of friends. After retirement from the Army, Al and Anne continued their globetrotting, taking vacations all around the world, reaching all 50 states and 7 continents. Al enjoyed playing tennis. When his knees finally gave out, he turned to officiating matches at both the college and professional levels. Al was a charter member of the Alamo City Tennis Officials. His greatest joys were his family and friends, his faith and maybe a little scotch now and then.
Albert is preceded in death by his parents, Anthony J. Boll and Elizabeth H. Boll.
Albert is survived by his wife of 64 years, Anne Boll (Torbet); four children, Kathleen Edenborough, Patricia Decot, retired Col Mark Boll and Mary Anne Boll; grandchildren, Ryan Boll, 1Lt Colin Boll, and Kathryn Decot; sister, Betty Anne Gallogly; and a host of family and friends that will cherish his memory.
In lieu of flowers, Al requested that memorial contributions be made to: Seton Home of San Antonio, Texas, Little Sisters of the Poor of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, or to a charity of your choice.
