Alice Nixon Burress

Alice Nixon Burress, 64, of Mt. Pleasant, SC died on Friday, September 5, 2014. She was born on Tuesday, June 27, 1950 in Columbia, SC to the late Margaret Bass Nixon and the late William H. Nixon. Alice was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church where she was ordained as an elder, served on the Long Range Planning Committee, Campus Master Plan Committee, Stephen Ministry and was instrumental in resettling refugee families. She was a graduate of Mount Holyoke College and Clemson University with a degree in architecture. Alice was very passionate about her work, family and helping others. She was diagnosed at 25 years of age with Lupus, and dedicated a large part of her adult life to raising awareness of the condition and establishing a local support group. She also served as past president of the Charleston Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and was involved in many other organizations. The Family would like to thank Dr. Elizabeth Christian, Dr. Georgia Roane, and Dr. Julia Haile and many others who have served Alice. Alice is survived by her loving husband of 36 years, David E. Burress III, of Mount Pleasant, SC, Son; William David (Emma) Burress of Burlington, NC, Brother; George B. (Margaret) Nixon of Spartanburg, SC, Nephews; John P. Nixon and Benjamin R. Nixon both of Asheville, NC, Mother-In-Law; Edythe C. Burress of Walterboro, SC, Sister-In-Law; Vandi (Rusty) Ragsdale of Simpsonville, KY, Brother-In-Law; Jim (Elaine) Burress of Middletown,RI, Nephew; Toby (Alena) Burress of Brooklyn, NY, Niece; Sophie Burress of Boston, MA. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church, 302 Hibben St, Mt Pleasant, SC 29464. The Family will receive friends at the church following the service. In lieu of Flowers donations in her name may be made to the Lupus Foundation of America, www.lupusnow.org or to Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church, 302 Hibben St, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464. Donations to Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church will be used to fund “Handicapped Access Improvements”.
