Barbara Anderson Gates

Barbara Anderson Gates, 87, passed away in Charleston, SC on Tuesday, April 4^th 2023, surrounded by love and her family.  She was born March 9^th 1936 in Chicago IL, the daughter of Harry E. and Martha (Scranton) Anderson. 

Barb was a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend. Barb was preceded in death by her husband, Charles A. Gates III.  She is survived by her 3 children: Doug (Linda) Gates, Cathy (Jim) Hamilton, and Michael (Phyllis) Gates; and her 6 grandchildren: Drew (Katie) Hamilton, Rachel (Jake) Young, Ryan Hamilton, Christine Gates, Wil Gates, and Ben Gates; and her younger sister, Midge (Kent) Merrill.

Barb graduated from Iowa State University, where she met her beloved husband. Barb and Chuck raised their family in Indianapolis, IN, moving to Mt. Pleasant, SC in 2001 after Chuck’s retirement.  Barb was a gentle soul and a tireless volunteer with First Scots Presbyterian Church, PEO, Crossroads and countless other organizations.  She was an avid golfer, quilter, baker, and reader.  Her love language was to make things for others, and you always felt lucky to be on the receiving end of a creation from Barb.  Barb had a gentle strength and a quiet competitiveness that came through every time she played games with her grandchildren!  She will be forever loved and dearly missed by all who knew her.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday April 17^th  at First Scots Presbyterian Church in Charleston, SC. After the service, family will receive friends in the church hall.
