Betty Miller Goupil, 84, of Swansea, South Carolina, passed away on Tuesday, January 27, 2026. Born on October 12, 1941, at home in Aiken County, she was the daughter of John Miller and Mattie Baughman Miller. She was married to Rev. Roger Goupil, who preceded her in death.
Betty was raised in New Holland, SC, and graduated from Wagner High School. She worked as a surgical technician at Palmetto Baptist Hospital, both in surgery and in the Birthplace, where she helped numerous families welcome their children into the world.
Betty loved her church family. She was a member of Mt. Hebron UMC until her husband, Roger, decided to go into the ministry. She followed him to numerous churches and loved serving the congregations as the minister’s wife. She was beloved by all in the various congregations they served and best known for her kind smile and warm hugs. Betty was most recently a member of Ebenezer Church in Swansea and attended Mt. Holly Methodist in Rock Hill after she moved to Rock Hill.
Betty loved to travel especially with Capitol Tours in West Columbia. She was always up for an adventure and loved to take trips with the travel club. She also loved to take day trips to see her family members especially her granddaughters whom she loved deeply. She never missed a volleyball tournament, school or church program, concert, or other special events. Joye and Abby’s friends all new and loved “Grandma.”
Betty is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda and Wayne Smith; her step-daughter and son-in-law Leslie and Keith Bax; her grandchildren Joye Smith, Abby (Brett) Polaski, and Axel (Ria) Bax and her chosen daughter Kristi (John) Binnicker. She is also survived by her sister-in-law and brother-in-law Sara and Marian Pazik of Lockport, NY and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Patrick and Matrissa Goupil of Wilson, NC. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is predeceased by her husband Roger C. Goupil; her brothers John Miller and Robert MIller.
A visitation will be held at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home on Saturday, February 7, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. A memorial service will also be held at 3:00 p.m. at Mt. Holly Methodist Church in Rock Hill. The family will greet friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Lexington Medical Center Foundation (107 Sunset Court, West Columbia, SC 29169 or Midlandsgives.org) in Betty’s memory.
