Michael Rodman Altine, Sr., 65, of Johns Island, South Carolina, passed away on Monday, June 15, 2026. Born on March 3, 1961, in Charleston, SC, 

Big Rod was the son of Sigrid Helander Altine and the late Homer Altine. 

Big Rod was the ultimate outdoorsman, especially fishing. He enjoyed gardening and birdwatching. Big Rod was a people person and never met a stranger. He was always the life of the party. Big Rod will be remembered for his scruffy, comforting voice and his infectious smile. He loved cooking for his family and friends. He was known for his lemon soup and his big family breakfast on Christmas morning. One way to always remember Big Rod – “Your line may be reeled in, but your memory will never drift away.” 

In addition to his father, Big Rod is preceded in death by his sister, Lisa Altine and great niece, Molly Jane Micalizzi. 

Big Rod is survived by his son, Michael “Little Rod” Altine (Lyndsey); daughters: Stacy Creel (Justin), Jillian "Bean" Altine and Olivia "Libby" Altine; mother, Sigrid Altine; siblings: Buster Altine (Tricia), Nick Altine (Gretchen), Beth Thomas (John), Laura Stone (Andy); grandchildren: Jaylen, Savannah, Mariah, Madison, Easton, Elliott, Abigail, Abel, Roman and Christian; a long loved list of nieces, nephews and friends. 

A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at Buster and Tricia’s house. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The SC Memorial Reef Fund.
