Carl Leon Baechtold

Carl Leon Baechtold, 95, of Summerville, South Carolina, passed away on Thursday, August 13, 2026. 

Born on June 26, 1931, in Chicago, IL, Carl was the son of the late Elizabeth Sardiga Baechtold and the late Carl Baechtold, Sr.

Carl was married to Irene Horinek Baechtold for 71 years. The couple met and lived in the Chicago area for many years. Carl and Irene left the Chicago area for work and lived in Rochester, NY. Upon retirement, they moved to Prescott, AZ, then Florence, SC, prior to settling in Summerville, SC.

Carl retired from Burroughs Corporation/Standard Register, where he was a Sales and Marketing Manager, traveling for much of his career. He was involved in the Catholic Church and often served as a Eucharistic minister. Carl was a Knight of Columbus, rising to the Fourth Degree.

Carl enjoyed traveling the US and around the world, and spending time with family and friends. He also enjoyed playing a good game of cards or pool, golfing, fishing, and dancing with Irene. He was known for his hummingbird food mix and liked watching the appreciative hummingbirds and many other birds in his yard and beyond. He shared his interest in history and in fixing things with his family. His grandson, Sam, enjoyed making models with him.

In addition to his parents, Carl is preceded in death by his sister, Arlene Reyher.

Carl is survived by his wife, Irene Baechtold; daughters, Sharon Baechtold and Gail Winkelstein (Marc); grandchildren, Sam Winkelstein and Sarah Winkelstein (Jack McNelis); his sister, Jeri Angleovich; and many nieces and nephews.
