Carol C. Merewether of Mount Pleasant, SC passed away on September 1, 2026, at the age of 83.

She was born in Pawtucket R.I. to Mendel and Louise Crocker. Following the death of her mother, Carol, age 7, and her sister grew up surrounded by the love of their father and extended family throughout New England. She had many fond memories of her childhood years and close bond with her cousins, spending her summers with her grandmother on Martha’s Vineyard and all the lifelong friends she made there.

After graduating from East Providence High School as a member of the Rhode Island Honor Society and tenth in her high school class of 506, Carol earned a scholarship to the prestigious Katharine Gibbs School (a private business school for women) in Providence, RI. In 1963 a group of visitors came to the door and insisted that she enter the Miss East Providence Pageant. She did and played classical piano as her talent, which she studied throughout her childhood. Carol finished as 2nd runner up in the pageant but was most proud of being voted Miss Congeniality by her peers. Upon graduating with honors from the Katharine Gibbs School, she worked at Brown University as Secretary to the Director of Development, where Carol met her future mother-in-law. Carol began raising her 3 children in East Providence before the family moved to Culpeper, VA in 1972. It was there that Carol studied at the American Institute of Banking, having achieved a 4.0 average. Marshall National Bank was the initiation of Carol’s banking career. Carol’s intelligence and drive moved her through the ranks to bank Senior Vice President, Human Resources. Carol was instrumental in the formation of Oak View National Bank in 2009. She worked there as Director of Human Resources until announcing her retirement in 2012. However, Carol’s dedication to the Bank and its people kept her there for six more years until her 2018 official retirement. In all, she dedicated 45 years to the bank, her colleagues, clients and customers.

Carol was actively involved in the Literacy Volunteers of Fauquier County where she spent many days at concert events or other local public events raising money for the cause. Carol loved traveling and the beach. She wanted to share her happy childhood adventures with her own children and grandchildren and made possible annual family beach vacations to Martha’s Vineyard where cherished memories were made. Wednesday Community Sings at the Tabernacle in Oak Bluffs, MA was one of her favorite things to do, along with sharing a beach day and eating a lobster or lobster roll. She loved beachcombing and even body surfing. Carol’s family was everything to her and she cherished every moment together. She was witty and had a great sense of humor. She was compassionate and generous with her time, talent, and love. She lit up a room upon entering and warmly welcomed and included anyone who entered after her. She genuinely cared about all people and typically, if not always and without question, put others before herself. She was a beautiful, selfless soul.

She is preceded in death by her parents Mendel and Louise Crocker, her sister and best friend Lynne Schreher, and her beloved daughter Whitney Merewether. She is survived by her loving family; son Patrick (Lynn), her daughter Courtney (Rodney), her 4 grandchildren, Josh (Marissa), Ryan (Valentina), Hannah (Nathan), and Briana (Hardik), 7 great-grandchildren; as well as her dear brother-in-law Jon Schreher and many nieces, nephews, and cousins whom she also adored.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the medical director, all caregivers, therapists, specialists, and her friends at Merrill Gardens at Carolina Park for the care and compassion they showed during her time there. They impacted Carol’s life in a positive way despite her recent challenges. We know that they are affected by her passing, having also lost Carol as one of their family members.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
