Chester John Mazur

Chester John Mazur of Charleston, South Carolina, passed away on Monday, May 12, 2025. He was 60 years old.

Born on January 31, 1965 in Detroit, Michigan, Chet was the youngest child of the late Delphine JoAnna (Becker) Mazur and the late Chester Walter Mazur.

Chet grew up in Center Line, Michigan and graduated from Center Line High School in 1983. He was a computer whiz kid and interned at General Motors on the Pontiac Fiero Project. He studied at and graduated from Oakland University with a Bachelor of Science in 1987. Chet was recruited by an aerospace company right out of college and moved to Los Angeles. Chet found success as a software engineer during the tech boom of the 1990s. Chet fell in love with The Golden State, eventually settling in the San Francisco area where he lived until just a couple years ago, when he relocated to South Carolina to be closer to family.

Chet was a generous and thoughtful man. He welcomed his family to visit him in California numerous times, and always made an effort to return home to Michigan. During his visits at Christmas time, Chet would take all five of his nieces and nephews out for a (long) day of shopping to ensure they had their ideal present from him.

Outside of work, Chet volunteered for years as a counselor at the American Juvenile Arthritis Foundation summer camps working with children who had the same condition he was diagnosed with at an early age. He was interested in real estate and flipped a number of houses. He loved the water, became a certified SCUBA diver and explored this passion on trips to Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, and even Australia.

Chet loved animals, especially dogs. He and his first dog, Rex, found each other on a hike and had more than a decade together. Later on, Chet rescued another dog, Buddy, from a shelter.

Chet is preceded in death by his parents, Chester Walter Mazur and Delphine JoAnna (Becker) Mazur.

Chet is survived by his sister, Andrea Shaw (Tom), and brother, Andrew Mazur. Chet was a loving uncle to Adam Shaw, Regan Shaw, Cara Daniel (Davide), Alisa Mazur (Tim Travis), and Derek Mazur (Hannah).

A celebration of life service will be planned in Michigan at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Arthritis Foundation or Muttville Senior Dog Rescue.
