Clive Walter Greaves, 89 of Beaufort, South Carolina, passed away on Thursday, January 29, 2026. Born on June 21, 1936 in Harrow, England, Clive was a son of the late Kate Winifred (Rogers) Greaves and Walter Henry Greaves.
An exceptionally accomplished golfer, Clive played a number of Pro-Ams in his professional role as Chairman and President, of the Distillers Company Ltd, American Division, combining a natural gift of the game and enthusiastic marketing of company brands Gordons Gin, Tanqueray Gin and Dewars, to name just a few. When recently asked who was his favorite legendary golf partner, he replied, “Arnold Palmer”. The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, also referred to as Muirfield, was his preferred “sabbatical” and golf course. Clive was also a proud former member of: Littlestone Golf Club, New Romney, England; Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, Southampton, NY, and WeeBurn Country Club, Darien, CT amongst others throughout his interesting life. He was a member of the British-American Chamber of Commerce and member of the Union Club, both of Manhattan, New York City. He was a Chartered Accountant qualifying with the Scottish Institute of Chartered Accountants.
Clive is well remembered for his elegant and individual style with an ever present pipe, use of words, gift of storytelling, and, with a twinkle in his eye, his clever, albeit cheeky, British sense of humour that only an Englishman and his charming accent could get away with. He loved to sail and took up boating as a senior in the Low Country of South Carolina. The Daily Telegraph Crossword (UK) challenged a curious and clever mind. He was a critical spectator of golf tournaments both in person and on television ideally with his loyal English Labradors by his side. He treated everyone the same and had a genuine interest in people expressed through past volunteering with the Literacy Volunteers of Beaufort County, and Beaufort Memorial Hospital – fittingly driving a golf cart to transport visitors. Clive loved his elegant sports cars especially his favourite, a vintage VC Morgan, he successfully enlisted to court future wife Jennifer. A consummate host, he is well remembered for his generous pours and exceptional knowledge of gins, whiskies and wines.
Clive is preceded in death by Walter Greaves (Father), Kate Greaves (Mother) and Alan Greaves (Brother). Clive is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Jennifer (Moore) Greaves; son, Robert Greaves (Ronda); daughter, Karen (Greaves) Nuelle; and grandchildren: Anabelle Nuelle Woodrow (Henry); Conor Nuelle (Emily), and Skyler Nuelle.
A Celebration of Life service is being planned for a later date.
