Darrell Wade Hanshaw, 61, of West Columbia, South Carolina, passed away on April 8, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and cherished memories.
Darrell was born on January 26, 1965, in Knoxville, Tennessee. He was known for his kindness, generosity, and sense of humor, and it was often said that he never met a stranger. He had a way of making those around him feel valued and loved, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
He attended Anderson College, Francis Marion College, and the University of South Carolina, experiences that helped shape the path of his life and career.
He was a devoted husband to his wife, Kramer, and a loving father to Parker (wife, Samantha), Copeland, and Amelia. He also had a very special bond with his mom, Betty. Darrell was a loving dad to his dog, Charlie, his cat, Louie, and numerous other beloved pets throughout the years. His family was the center of his world, and he took great pride in being there for them through every stage of life. He especially loved cooking for large groups, coaching his children’s sports teams, and giving his time back to the community—simple joys that brought people together and reflected his generous spirit. Some of his favorite things to do were hanging out on the beach, fishing on the boat, golfing and watching the Gamecocks.
Darrell was also well known in the community as the founder of D’s Wings, which he established in 1987 in Parkland Plaza in Cayce. Through his vision and hard work, the restaurant grew to 7 locations, becoming a place where countless memories were made. One of the most beloved locations, D’s on Beltline, became something of a home base—a place where friends, family, and the community gathered and connected. Today, one of the D’s Wings locations remains open, which has been owned and operated by one of his close friends for many years, continuing the tradition and community Darrell built. Through D’s Wings, he created not just a business, but a community built on love, laughter, and connection.
After stepping away from D’s in 2016, Darrell formed other restaurant ventures and partnerships and worked several other jobs. Most recently, he was employed at Lowe’s Home Improvement, where he continued to build strong bonds within the community he loved.
Darrell is survived by his wife, Kramer; his children, Parker (wife, Samantha), Copeland, and Amelia; his mother, Betty Lucas; his stepfather, Carol Lucas Sr.; his uncle, George Langston; his stepmother, Donna Hanshaw; his stepbrother, James Ward; his stepsister, Wendy Lewis; his mother-in-law, Sue Jones; his sister-in-law, Amary Sox; his brother-in-law, Mark Sox; and his nephews, Will and Dawson Sox. He was preceded in death by his father, Wayne Hanshaw; his father-in-law, The Reverend Thom Jones; his grandmothers, Tillie Hanshaw and Bertha Langston; and his uncles, Bob Hanshaw, Calvin Hanshaw, Jack Langston and Robert Langston. He was also preceded in death by, and is survived by, extended family including beloved grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Though he is no longer with us, Darrell’s love and the memories he created will live on in those who knew and loved him. He was the best.
A memorial service will be held on April 18, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Shandon United Methodist Church, officiated by The Reverend C.E. “Smoke” Kanipe. Family and friends are invited to attend, with light refreshments to follow as we gather to remember and celebrate his life.
