Dennis Wilbur Barfield

Listen to Obituary

Dennis W. Barfield, 84, of Goose Creek, South Carolina, husband of Sylvia J. Woods Barfield, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at 10:47 a.m. As he would always say, "When your number is up, your number is up." His was up when he raised his head a little, opened his eyes, and smiled and in that moment, we felt sure he saw the face of God.

Dennis was a longtime member of Crowfield Baptist Church. In his younger years, he was a member of First Baptist Church of Goose Creek, and he was one of the first to be the ordained as a deacon in the new sanctuary. He and the men of the church helped build that sanctuary alongside Clarence Thomas, and many others. He worked faithfully with the Royal Ambassadors and took them to Camp McCall during those years.

In addition to being a devoted Christian and loving family man, Dennis had a servant's heart. He shared this through his book ministry, where thousands of books were distributed around Goose Creek for the purpose of reaching souls for Jesus. He was known for his generosity, his faith, and his love for helping others.

Dennis proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy for 20 years. His first duty station was aboard the USS Yorktown (CVS-10) out of Long Beach, California, now a history museum at Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.

After retiring from the Navy, Dennis and his wife Sylvia opened Barfield's Appliance & Parts in Goose Creek, SC. They signed a contract with General Electric Company and together they operated the appliance store & Appliance Warehouse, Inc, for 30 years.

Dennis was an adventurous soul who loved life and exploring the world. He traveled extensively during and after his military career taking numerous trips across the United States and even traveling around the world once with his antique car friends. Skydiving is another example of his adventurous nature. He maintained a personal museum of treasures he collected throughout his life, always eager to share them with others. He wanted others to enjoy his collection as much as he did.

Born March 16, 1941, in Pitts, Georgia, Dennis was the son of Jessie Lee and Euletha M. Barfield. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Sylvia Woods Barfield; daughters Lisa (Bill) Schaffer of Franklinton, NC, and Sonya (George) Pitt of Moncks Corner, SC; grandchildren Ashton (Roy) Mitchell, Mallory (Braxton) Kubasko, Mackenzie (Cole) Beaver, and Luke Schaffer; and great-grandchildren Kipton, Kade, Tenley, Bryce & Ava Mitchell, Ben Stout, and Shepherd Kubasko. He is also survived by sisters Pat White, Sharon (Freddie) Pelt, and Sheila (Clem) Garza; brother Steve (Kim) Barfield; and sister-in-law Reba Barfield, all of Georgia and leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, sister Glenda Heath and brother Ronnie Barfield.

The family will receive family & friends at Crowfield Baptist Church 100 Hunters Lane, Goose Creek, SC on Saturday, November 1st, from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM, followed by a funeral service at 2:30 PM. Burial will follow at Plantation Memorial Gardens.
