Donald “Donnie” Eugene Almond, 92, of Charleston, SC, passed away on Friday, April 25, 2025, at Veterans Victory House in Walterboro, SC.
Donnie was born on November 10, 1932, in Sullivan, WV and was a son to the late Jennie (Sheets) Almond and Levi Almond.
Donnie enlisted in the Airforce in 1953 to proudly serve as an aircraft engineer mechanic in the Troop Carrier Squadron. He was later the owner of Almond Incorporated on King Street in Charleston, SC, retiring as Manager of Closet Treasures Thrift Store. He was a long-time member of the James Island Baptist Church. He loved the Atlanta Braves but most of all enjoyed being with his family.
Donnie grew up in Beckley, WV where he met his sweetheart, Kitty Sue and they were married for almost 66 years when Kitty passed in 2019.
“Mr. Don,” a name known by many, was known for his sly smile, corny jokes, and unending optimism. A man like no other and genuinely a good soul. He loved the Lord and making people laugh. He was a family man to a fault. His incredible faith, steadfast love, obedience to God and His Word served as an example that will last a lifetime. He was a son, brother, cousin, father, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend, and pal.
Donnie was preceded in death by his wife, Kitty Sue (Fox) Almond; brothers, John (Mary), Levi “Al” (ArnaMae), Dicky (Jeraldine), Fred (Drema), Jack (Carol Ann), Gerry (Vera), Ted (Betty), Mickey (Loretha); sisters, Kathryn (James), Margaret (Paul), Mary Elizabeth, and Peggy (Leon).
Donnie is survived by his three sons, Mark Almond (Alice), Scott Almond, and Kyle Almond; two daughters, Brittany Almond and Sydnee Almond; granddaughter, Sarah Almond Bramlett (Tom); three grandsons, James Almond, Caleb Almond, and Cooper Hines; adopted sister, Rose Jennie (Harry); sister, Carol Almond Bailey (Dicky) and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Veterans Victory House, Patriot Hospice, and Palliative Care for their kindness and compassion.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 14, 2025, from 10:00-11:00 am at James Island Baptist Church, 2023 Wappoo Drive, Charleston, SC 29412.
The Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 am, also at James Island Baptist Church. Burial will follow at 2:00 pm at Live Oak Memorial Gardens, 3093 Ashley River Road, Charleston, SC 29414.
