Douglas W. Berry

Douglas W. Berry of Charleston, SC passed away at his home on Wednesday, May 22, 2024.

He was born on September 17, 1943, the son of Keith and Anna Berry and grew up in Valley Stream, NY.

Doug loved sports and played football in high school and with the University of Arizona Wildcats. He received a BA in 1967 from Parsons College of Fairfield, Iowa and an MA degree from Truman State University. He met his wife, Beth Zimmerman, while teaching middle school and coaching high school and sophomore football in Fairfield. There Doug earned his pilot's license and loved flying the Piper. During his years in Hobart, IN, Doug and Beth enjoyed golfing at the Supervisor's Club and sailing on Lake Michigan.

Doug is preceded in death by his son Michael Townsend Berry, sister-in-law Diane (Buzz) Stephens, and niece Leslie Kotvasz. He is survived by his wife of 56 years Beth, niece Cathy Stephens of Omaha and many dear cousins and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Humane Society of Hobart, IN or Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

The family will receive friends on Thursday June 13 2024 from 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home 2501 Bees Ferry Road Charleston, SC 29414. A memorial service to honor Doug will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday June 13 2024 at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, with a gathering immediately following at the same location.
