Dr. Thomas A. Dix, Ph.D. passed away at MUSC on November 18, 2023, surrounded by his family.

 

Tom was born January 7,1956 in Flint, MI. He completed his BS at the University of Michigan, his Ph.D. at Wayne State University, and his postgraduate work at Penn State.

 

He was a prolific researcher, publishing 100 scientific papers and holding six patents in the field of medicinal drug discovery. His 33-year career in academic research secured over $30 million in funding from public and private grants and investments.

 

His positions included: Assistant Professor, Departments of Chemistry and Biological Chemistry University of California-Irvine, 1987-1994; Associate Professor, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences Medical University of South Carolina, 1994-2020; Professor Emeritus, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences Medical University of South Carolina, 2020-2023; Co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Argolyn Bioscience Inc., Halimed Pharmaceuticals Inc., and JT Pharmaceuticals Inc.


In addition to his career, Tom was an avid reader, record collector, and fan of Michigan/Detroit sports, especially his beloved Detroit Pistons. He was happiest boating in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, smoking a cigar on the deck, and sharing stories with friends and family. Known affectionately as Pop, he will be remembered for his passion for life and love for his family.

 

He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Catherine, his two children, Sarah and Sean (Shelby), his mother, Elizabeth, his two brothers, David (Christy) and John (Chika), and five nephews, Matthew, Logan, James, Tanner, and Richie.

 

He was preceded in death by his father Richard T. Dix. 

 

A private service will be held to honor him in Michigan.
