Elizabeth Bass, 88 of Jacksonville, FL, formerly of Charleston, SC, passed away on Friday, June 26, 2026.

Born on July 29, 1937 in Redcar, County of York N.R., England, Elizabeth was the daughter of the late Agnes Garraway (Smith) Johns and the late Hector Max Johns.

Elizabeth is preceded in death by her parents, Hector Max Johns and Agnes Garraway (Smith) Johns; sister, Carol Rookes; her husband, Charles “Sam” Bass; son, Patrick Ringwald; and stepson, Steven Bass.

Elizabeth is survived by her son, Michael Ringwald; daughter, Carol Ringwald; stepdaughters Gail (Rick) Ellis; Peggy Bass; Luanne Young; Kathy (Jim) Brown; stepson Tim Bass; 16 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and 2 great, great grandchildren.

Known as Mom, Liz, (The) Nana and Ma, to many of the friends she made through her children, Elizabeth lived with an adventurous spirit. Having survived the assault on England during the 2nd World War, she met and married her first husband, Paul Ringwald, moved to a new country, submitted to and passed the tests required to become a naturalized citizen of the United States of America, and learned the ways to survive and exist as a wife, mother and individual in new and unknown country with a husband often gone in service to our country.

She came to a foreign land, learned the rules, and not only survived, but blossomed. She didn’t just raise her 3 children, she signed on as a “parent” to her 2nd husband,Sam’s 6.

She met every challenge head on with the enthusiasm of a mother bear protecting her cubs and learning the terrain. Her enthusiasm for seeking new knowledge, interesting facts and trivia fueled many of us to ask, learn, read, and strive to know more.

She was a much loved member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 283 in Jacksonville, FL. She loved to read, watch Jeopardy, play trivia, sew for anyone that needed mending or alterations, make quilts for family and friends, and make jewelry. Her cooking would bring friends around with empty containers to be filled. She worked as a secretary in England before moving to the United States to raise a family with her first husband. She worked at Family Services and the commissary on base, waitressed, tended bar, worked for Publix and as a secretary/administrative assistant for a variety of enterprises.

A Celebration of Life service will be held 7/25/26 from 1 - 4 pm at the American Legion Post 283, 9459 Ft. Caroline Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32225.
