Emanuel Robel Yohannes

Listen to Obituary

Emanuel Robel Yohannes, a remarkably sweet, kind, and ambitious young man, passed away at the vibrant age of 23. Born on December 3, 2002, in Portsmouth, Virginia, Emanuel brought an undeniable light into the lives of everyone who had the privilege of crossing his path. To know him was to love him. He was a faithful friend to all, known for his gentle spirit and his capacity to love deeply.

From a very young age, Emanuel’s brilliance and boundless energy were undeniable. He was an incredibly smart boy who possessed a rare, precocious intellect. While in elementary school, he amazed those around him with his remarkable memory—effortlessly naming every U.S. president alongside their first ladies, identifying every state, and demonstrating a natural internal compass by pinpointing the exact location of almost any street. Emanuel paired this sharp mind with an active spirit, spending much of his youth on the move. He grew up playing a variety of sports, finding great joy in swimming, baseball, and soccer.

Emanuel’s journey took him across various communities where he left a lasting impression. He began his education at Hatchett Elementary in San Antonio, Texas, before moving to Shaw Elementary in Beavercreek, Ohio. He later attended Jacob Coy Middle School and graduated from Wando High School in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina—a testament to the bright future he was actively building.

A young man of big dreams and endless potential, Emanuel possessed a fierce ambition and an intellectual curiosity that always drew him toward the future. Since childhood, he was an avid collector, finding joy in gathering model cars and vintage electronics like VHS players, cassette players, and boomboxes. This early curiosity blossomed into a profound, lifelong passion for technology; he was always eager to explore how things worked and discover what the next digital frontier would be. When he wasn't immersed in tech, Emanuel could be found indulging his love for cars—a hobby that fueled his enthusiasm and mirrored his drive for life.

Above all else, Emanuel’s heart was anchored by his values, his heritage, and his family. He was incredibly proud of his Eritrean heritage, deeply loving and embracing his culture and its music. His gift for connection extended to linguistics; growing up, he dedicated himself to learning multiple languages, including Spanish, Arabic, and his native Tigrinya. Emanuel also possessed a deep wonder for the world, loving to travel and explore new cultures. His adventures took him across the globe, creating beautiful memories in breathtaking places like Switzerland, Paris, and Italy.

Profoundly faith-driven, Emanuel believed in God with all his heart and found immense comfort in his spirituality, choosing to carry his rosary with him at all times. His love for his family was fierce, unconditional, and the guiding force in everything he did.

Emanuel leaves behind a family who adored him beyond words. He is survived by his devoted mother, Fortuna; his loving father, Robel; and his cherished younger brother, Sammy, who will forever carry Emanuel’s memory, his laughter, and his big dreams in their hearts.

Though his life was far too short, the love Emanuel gave and the impact he made will never be forgotten. His memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Rest in peace, sweet Emanuel
