Emily Martin Jenkins Hindman, 90 years old, of James Island, SC, passed away October 6, 2026.
Emily was a retired Licensed Masters-Level Psychiatric and Medical Social Worker at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC and former newspaper reporter and editor in Aiken, SC.
Born June 29, 1936 in Charleston, she was the daughter of Emily Sinkler Martin of Eutawville and Dr. Pierre Gautier Jenkins, a Charleston native who practiced ophthalmology for almost 50 years. He helped found the Albert Florens Storm Eye Institute at MUSC, where an Endowed Chair, in which sits the Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology, is named for him.
Ms. Hindman attended Ashley Hall for 12 years, where she was a member of the varsity basketball and volleyball teams and won the Ashley Hall Riding Championship. She graduated as Valedictorian in 1954. She made her debut in Charleston in the 1954 season.
She entered Vassar College. She transferred junior year to the University of South Carolina and later, as a non-traditional student at USC Aiken, she graduated with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry. One daughter and three granddaughters are also USCA graduates and her great grandson is in his freshman year.
She raised her family in Aiken, South Carolina, where she lived for more than 30 years, and taught Sunday School and chaired a circle of elderly women at the Aiken First Presbyterian Church. She served as president of the Evergreen Garden Club and became involved in politics. In 1964 she was named South Carolina Young Republican of the Year after serving as Aiken County Republican Party PR Chairman.
In 1968 the Augusta Chronicle newspaper recruited her to work in its Aiken Bureau. She later joined the staff of the Aiken Standard newspaper after the Charleston Post and Courier bought the paper, which later named her news editor. She reported the first evidence of illegal drugs in the city, covering crime, city and county government, and writing many features on local social agencies as well as a church column. She was awarded first prize for interpretive news reporting by the SC Women’s Press Association at one of its annual conventions.
She returned to Charleston in 1985 to work in Public Relations at MUSC. Vassar College awarded her a $25,000 grant to facilitate a career change. She then earned a Masters in Social Work degree at USC, and for three years worked with severely emotionally disturbed children in a pilot program, Continuum of Care, under the SC Governor’s Office. In 1996, she returned to MUSC as a Medical Social Worker, assisting the sick and the poor in the adult acute care hospital. She retired in 2001 and continued to work part-time in MUSC's Children’s Hospital.
As a grandmother, Emily started vacationing yearly at Montreat, as did her grandparents and father. She hosted her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren who are 6th generation Montreaters.
She enjoyed living in her home in James Island on the Stono River where she fished and kayaked regularly and welcomed friends and family.
She is survived by her children, Linda Emily Hindman (John) D’Amico, Cathy Furtick (Paul), and Tom Hindman Eileen); her grandchildren, Emily Ann Raynor (Scott), Caroline Foreman (Chris), Mamie Foreman, and Jennifer Foreman (Peter); Ben Furtick (Suzy), Josh Furtick (Meg), David Furtick (Laura); Shelley Hunka (Joe), and Joseph Hindman (Diana); her great grandchildren, Emily Alyssa and Katie Raynor; Isaac, Bailey, Micah and Titus DesRocher; Jackson, Evan, and Josephine Gardiner; Alister O'Connor; Harvey Furtick; Cora Furtick; Cameran Hunka; Charleston Claire and Thomas Banks Hindman.

The family would like to thank the amazing Skilled Nursing staff at Laurel Crest Senior Living for keeping her smiling for the past three years and supporting us in Emily’s final week.
