Evelyn Jean Berner

Evelyn JEAN Berner of Mt. Pleasant, SC, formerly from Seabrook Island, SC passed away peacefully on November 9, 2023.  Born June 15, 1928 in Detroit, MI, Jean was the daughter of the Late John Walter and Nellie Alice (Sutton) Svoboda.

Jean was a member of The Church of Our Savior where she served both as an acolyte and a member of the Altar Guild. She was a very active community member, volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, the Charleston Symphony Orchestra League, the Charleston Spoleto Festival, Meals on Wheels, and Respite Care, to name a few. Jean was a member of the Seabrook Island Turtle watch team, truly a labor of love for her. In her free time, she enjoyed her early morning walks, gardening, cross-stitching and reading. 

Jean was preceded in death by her daughter, Diane Voelker, brother, Robert Svoboda, and son-in-law, Raymond Herwig Jr.  She is survived by her daughters Christy Herwig, Gail Gill (Pidge), and Janice Berner (Jim), as well as her son-in-law RADM (Ret.) George Voelker, her devoted niece, Sue Pierdon, 11 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 9, 2023 at The Church of Our Savior, 4416 Betsy Kerrison Parkway, Johns Island, SC 29455.
