Frederick Eugene Roark, 81, of Johns Island, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 26, 2025.

Born on April 19, 1944, in Logansport, Indiana, Fred was the beloved son of the late Lois June (Kasper) Roark and David Mitchel Roark.

Fred was a decorated Vietnam War hero, recognized for his courage and service to his country. He was awarded two Purple Hearts, two Silver Stars, and three Bronze Stars for his bravery during his tours of duty.

Following his military service, Fred earned his degree from Indiana University and went on to complete two master’s degrees. A man of strong faith and intellect, Fred served as a minister and cherished his time teaching Sunday School. He was also a talented writer and the author of three books, sharing his wisdom and experiences with others.

Fred lived a life guided by faith, family, and purpose. He was always prepared, always teaching, and always willing to lend a helping hand. One of his greatest joys was cheering on his grandchildren from the sidelines—whether they were competing in sports or performing in the band, he was their biggest fan. Fred will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, stepfather, and grandfather whose warmth, strength, and generosity touched countless lives.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, David and June Roark, and his son, Frederick Eugene “Gene” Roark, Jr.

He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce Harper Roark; his children, Katherine Roark Strobl (Jeff), Amanda Roark Fertmann (Mark), Deborah Harper Radzinski (Dennis), Gregory Harper, and Sherry Harper DuPree; his siblings, Mike Roark and Janet Evanega Rieckhoff (Jim). Fred was the proud grandfather of Connor Strobl, Jackson Strobl, Justus Fertmann, Candice Hilse, Ashley Braddock, Megan Andreas, Alexis DuPree, and John Michael DuPree, and blessed with many great-grandchildren who brought him endless joy.

Fred’s life was one of service—to his country, his faith, and his family. His legacy of love, courage, and curiosity will live on in all who knew him. “Well done, good and faithful servant.” — Matthew 25:23
