James Henry Spence

James Henry Spence, 81, of Goose Creek, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2026.

Born on February 8, 1945, in Washington, D.C., James was the son of the late Winifred Mooney Spence and Myles Kenneth Spence. He was also preceded in death by his beloved brother, Kenneth Myles Spence, and sister, Patricia Spence.

Born into a generation shaped by duty, hard work, and service, James embodied those values throughout his life. On July 1, 1962, he answered the call to serve his country and began what would become a distinguished career in the United States Navy. For more than twenty-five years of faithful and honorable military service, James rose through the ranks to achieve the highly respected position of Senior Chief Petty Officer. He led with humility, strength, and professionalism, earning the admiration of those who served beside him and the trust of those under his leadership. His career reflected the highest traditions of the United States Navy and exemplified the values of duty, honor, courage, and commitment. Upon his retirement on February 1, 1988, he left a lasting impact on the sailors he mentored, the missions he supported, and the nation he proudly served.

While James took great pride in his military career, the center of his life was always his family. He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Beverly Ann Spence, whose love and partnership were among his life's greatest blessings. He was a proud and loving father to Tina Marie Spence Miller and Myles James Spence, embracing his role as husband and father with the same dedication and loyalty that defined his military service. His wisdom, guidance, strength, and unwavering love provided a foundation upon which his family could always depend.

To those who knew him, James was far more than his rank or accomplishments. He was a man of integrity, character, and compassion. He believed in doing what was right, led by example, and carried himself with dignity and grace throughout his life. His quiet strength inspired confidence, his counsel brought comfort, and his presence provided reassurance to all who knew and loved him.

James leaves behind a legacy not measured by titles or achievements alone, but by the lives he touched, the family he cherished, and the example he set. He will be remembered with immense love, deep admiration, and enduring gratitude. Though his earthly watch has ended, the values he lived by and the memories he created will continue to guide and inspire those who follow.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly Ann Spence; his daughter, Tina Marie Spence Miller; and his son, Myles James Spence.

Fair winds and following seas, Senior Chief. Your duty has been faithfully fulfilled, your watch is relieved, and your legacy of honor, service, and love will endure forever.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home in Goose Creek.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, June 25, 2026, at Beaufort National Cemetery.
