Janet Charles Nimitz Nye, age 90, passed away after a brief illness on Thursday, July 24, 2025, at her home in Summerville surrounded by family.
Janet, born June 22, 1935, in Moncks Corner Hospital, was the daughter of Francis Kramer Nimitz and Virginia Godfrey Nimitz. She grew up on Folly Beach and downtown Charleston with many summers spent with her grandmother in Holly Hill. She later lived in Japan and Germany, returning to the United States in the 1970s.
She had a lifelong passion for fabrics and sewing. She could often be found at her sewing machine, making clothes for her children and herself, Barbie doll outfits for her daughter, and a trunk full of magical dress-up clothes, including hats and purses, for her grandchildren.
She worked at Cloth World in West Ashley for many years, passing along her knowledge and skills to others. She retired from Boone Fabrics, where set directors for movies being filmed in the Charleston area would often seek her expertise. Following retirement, she took great joy in her volunteer work at St. Francis Hospital.
Janet was predeceased by her parents, her sister Jean Behling, and her eldest son, William Nye.
She is survived by her children: Michael Nye (Carolyn), Janet Lee Nye (Jason), and Mark Nye; her sister Eunis Benecke; her beloved niece Francine Meyer; her grandchildren: Douglas Nye, Daniel Robertson, Sarah Gibbs, Laura Schulz, Alexis Cook, Caitlin Rumph, Eamonn Nye, Eilish Nye, and Alexandria Kessel; her great-grandchildren: Veronica (Ronnie), June, Kate, Rachel, Kensley, Adleigh, Wyatt, Hannah, Hunter, Tyler, Tanner, Harper, and James; and her beloved daughter-in-law, Staci Witt.
The family will receive friends on Friday, August 1, 2025, from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM at McAlister-Smith Funeral & Cremation in Goose Creek. The graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, August 2, 2025 at the Holly Cemetery, Harvey Street in Holly Hill, South Carolina.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lowcountry Food Bank.
