Technical Sergeant, United States Air Force · Military Firefighter · 14 Years of Service
Joa'n Ramon Ortega, 33, of Goose Creek, South Carolina, passed away on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2026. Born on June 28, 1992, in the Bronx, New York, Joa'n served in the United States Air Force for 14 years, rising to the rank of Technical Sergeant and serving as a military firefighter - someone who ran toward danger so others could be safe. His service took him across the globe, from duty stations in Texas, California, Dubai, South Korea, Belgium, and Iraq, before being stationed at Joint Base Charleston, where he made his home in Goose Creek, South Carolina.
He was the most noble, patient, selfless, and gentle soul - a man whose heart was bigger than this world. A lone wolf by nature, he traveled the globe solo, surfed waves, rode longboards, and always drove with the windows down just to feel the air. He loved music deeply, adored animals, and wrote an unpublished screenplay. He had incredible integrity in the smallest ways and a level of empathy that stretched further than most people's understanding. He was unassuming, mysterious, and, without trying, genuinely cool.
Joa'n was quietly changing lives long before anyone knew. He founded Projects Aiding Others (ProjectsAidingOthers.com), a nonprofit dedicated to charitable service, giving generously without ever seeking recognition. He listened fully and attentively, gave his undivided attention to everyone he loved, never spoke ill of anyone, and simply showed up - again and again - for the people and causes that needed him most.
He is survived by his mother, Yokasta Santana Diaz; his stepfather, Jose Nahum Diaz; his brother, Liarvis Ortega; and his sister, Yanishka Ortega Smith.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Knightsville Methodist Church, 1505 Central Ave, Summerville, SC 29483. It will be officiated by Pastor Robert Harper.
