John Joseph Capitan, Jr.

John Joseph Capitan Jr., 77, of Charleston, SC, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2024. It was his faith in Christ and his loving family that sustained him during his short battle with cancer.

Born on October 3, 1946, in Charleston, SC, he was the son of the late Ernestine Bunch Capitan and the late John J. Capitan Sr.

Joe graduated from Bishop England High School in 1964.  He continued his education at Trident Technical College and received his degree in mechanical engineering.  He later earned his Professional Engineering (PE) license.  In 1981, he established Delta Engineering, Inc. in Greenville, SC.  He served as President and led the consulting engineering firm for 40 years.  Under Joe's leadership, Delta Engineering served clients in the industrial, commercial, educational, government, and healthcare sectors.  In 2008, he was invited by Clemson University to serve as an adjunct professor in the Construction Sciences and Management department.  Joe was a gifted engineer, teacher, and mentor to many; both in the classroom and throughout his career.  In recent years, he was employed by Cambridge International and Addison Energy Technologies.

Joe was known for his outgoing personality and vibrant sense of humor.  He truly never met a stranger.  He was passionate about his faith, family, and his many friends.

In addition to his parents, Joe is preceded in death by his sisters, Genevieve Capitan and Catherine Capitan Jenkins.

Joe is survived by Sherry Scott Capitan of Greenville, SC; his children, John J. Capitan, III of Greenville, SC and Andralee Capitan Bright (Gus) and his granddaughter, Audrey Caroline Bright of Daniel Island, SC; sister, Susan Capitan Darby (Ron) of Franklin, NC; three nephews and two nieces.

A celebration of Joe's life will be held at a later date. He will be interred in a family plot at Bethany Cemetery.
