John Frederick Merritt, Jr., passed away peacefully on March 15, 2026, in Charleston, South Carolina.
Born on August 3, 1990, in Belleville, Illinois to John Merritt and Catherine Marks Merritt, John carried with him a lifelong commitment to both his faith and his civic duties.
John's early years were shaped by his athletic talent and dedication to teamwork, distinguishing himself as a star baseball player throughout grade school, high school, and college. He proudly attended Althoff High School, where his passion and skill on the baseball field were well-known, before continuing as a starting pitcher at South Western Illinois College. These formative experiences not only honed his competitive spirit but also cemented the values of discipline and perseverance that would define his professional and personal life.
Transitioning from athletics to a successful career, John became a licensed LLR Realtor specializing in high-end resort properties. Beyond his career achievements, John was deeply invested in his community life. He served as Secretary of Masonic Lodge #396, served as the Folly Beach Planning Commissioner, and was an active member of the Exchange Club, Men's Club and the Civic Club. John demonstrated his commitment to public service by running for City Council on Folly Beach. His efforts extended to supporting local governance through operating video cameras for City Council meetings, ensuring transparency and engagement within the community.
John’s devotion to faith was central to his identity. A devout Catholic, he contributed his voice to the church choir and upheld his spiritual commitments with grace. His love for Charleston County was further expressed through his role as a Park Ranger, where he combined his passion for the outdoors with service to the public. He believed wholeheartedly in his civic duties and his duty to God, living each day with purpose and humility.
John’s family and friends remember him for his kindness, steadfastness, and the joyful spirit he brought to all aspects of his life. In addition to his father, he is survived by his uncle Hugh Davis, and cousins Kelly Hagan, Rod Merritt, and Kimberly Merritt. He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Catherine Marks Merritt.
