Joy Brokes

Dr. Joy Brokes, 77, of Mount Pleasant, SC, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, September 16, 2021, following a brief but valiant battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of nearly 50 years, Aladar J. Brokes.
Born on November 15, 1943 in Natick, MA, Joy was a daughter of the late Guy Henry Cunningham and Leonor Cunningham. She resided in Whippany, NJ for many years before relocating to Mount Pleasant in 2015.
Joy graduated from the College of New Jersey and had a long career as a math educator. One of her proudest accomplishments was earning a Doctorate of Education from Montclair State University in 2010. Joy was an avid crafter whose many talents included sewing, knitting, crochet, painting, origami, stained glass, glass blowing, jewelry making and more. After moving to Mount Pleasant, Joy found a new passion in ballroom dancing, performing in many showcases and competitions with her friends at International Ballroom Dance Studios. Joy was very active in the senior ministry at Christ Our King and volunteered regularly with East Cooper Habitat for Humanity.
Joy is survived by her children Christopher Brokes (Samantha), Michael Brokes (Constance), Kevin Brokes (Tracy) and Susan Kelly (John); grandchildren Alexander, Andrew, Kathryn, Jacob and Ethan; siblings Guy Cunningham (Kathleen), Suzanne George (Ray), Lee Austin and Caryl Hudson (Herb); and many loving extended family members.
The family will receive friends on Monday, September 20, 2021 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, 1520 Rifle Range Road,Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464.
The funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, September 21, 2021, 10:30 am at Christ Our King, 1122 Russell Drive, Mount Pleasant, SC 29464.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Joy`s memory may be made to East Cooper Habitat for Humanity or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
