Kenneth Jackson (Jack) Thomas was born on April 4, 1946, in Little Rock, Arkansas, and died on July 3, 2026, in Charleston, South Carolina.
Jack grew up in Fordyce, Arkansas, and was known for his skill as a classical pianist and organist. Jack earned a B.S. in Biology from Hendrix College in 1968, a M.S. in Zoology-Anatomy/ Physiology from the University of Arkansas in 1972, an EdD. In Higher Education in 1985 from the University of Arkansas, and a B.S. in Physical Therapy from the University of Central Arkansas in 1987. He taught at the University of Central Arkansas from 1975 to 1988 and at the Medical University of South Carolina from 1988 to 2023, when he retired. He taught Gross Anatomy, Neuroanatomy, and Pathophysiology to students in Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Nurse Anesthesia, and Physician Assistant programs. Jack was nominated for and received many awards for teaching excellence. He was valued for his vast knowledge, kindness, and dedication. His door was always open for a student or fellow educator in need. He served as a mentor to students and young faculty. Through his leadership of The Cultural Arts Projects Committee, Jack worked to provide opportunities for MUSC students and faculty to enjoy the world of visual and performance arts that is such a part of Charleston. Jack also practiced as a home health physical therapist for many years during his teaching career.
Jack is survived by his wife of 56 years, Kathy Thomas; son, Matthew; and daughter, Jennifer, all of Charleston. He is predeceased by his parents, Kenneth Thomas and Cozie Thomas Sorrells of Fordyce.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, August 14, 2026, in Saint Luke's Chapel on the MUSC campus.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Dr. Jack Thomas Memorial Scholarship: MUSC Foundation, 18 Bee Street, MSC 450, Charleston, SC 29425.
