Lorraine Selma Carlson McAnaw passed away peacefully in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, on July 16, 2026, at the age of 89.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, on Independence Day in 1937, Lorraine was the cherished daughter of Wilmore and Eva Carlson. She spent her upbringing in Groveland, Florida, where her father operated local citrus groves. Following her high school graduation, she returned to her birthplace of Chicago to pursue her passion for caring for others by attending nursing school.

It was during her time in Chicago that she met the love of her life, John J. McAnaw, who was serving in the United States Navy submarine force. Their story began with a memorable first date on April Fool’s Day, leading to a joyful marriage on July 24, 1959. Together, they shared a vibrant life and built homes across Newfoundland, Virginia, New York, and ultimately Charleston, South Carolina, where John retired. Throughout their years together, Lorraine and John shared a love for travel, sailing the waters, and enjoying good wine in good company.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John; her daughter, Linnea; and her parents, Wilmore and Eva Carlson.

She leaves behind a loving family to honor her memory: her sons, Mark and David; her sister, Louise Wilhem; her grandsons, Josh McAnaw (Erin) and Karl Parker; her granddaughter, Amelia Parker; and her great-granddaughters, Evelyn Parker and Madeline McAnaw.

Her warmth, adventurous spirit, and devotion to her family will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to McAlister-Smith Funeral and Cremation,1520 Rifle Range Rd, Mount  Pleasant, SC 29466   843-884-3833
