Marcy Sourlis Freeman, 73, of Summerville, South Carolina, passed away on Sunday, August 16, 2026.
Born Marcy Joanne Sourlis on October 14, 1952, in Kew Gardens, Queens, NY, Marcy was the daughter of Margaret Elizabeth Sourlis (Gepner) and George Sourlis.
During her early childhood Marcy lived at Water's Edge Fishing Station in Bayville, NY, which her parents owned. By her teens the family had moved to Commack, NY, and her father's alcoholism was worsening. Her marriage to the late Rafael Velez and their subsequent move to Puerto Rico occurred two years after her high school graduation. Two lovely daughters emerged from this marriage, Melina and Larissa. The family returned to the mainland and lived in Connecticut until the early 80's when Marcy and the girls fled the marriage and returned home to her mother on Long Island. A divorce and second marriage to Kenneth Freeman followed in 1984. Marcy was able to continue her education after her second marriage and achieved a Bachelor of Arts from Empire State College. She worked for several years as a substance abuse counselor at North Suffolk Center in Smithtown. Marcy excelled at painting and had a lifelong interest in creating art, whether brush paintings or later spin painting and resin castings. Her artistic interests led to her first business, Green Lotus Aromatherapy, in the 90's making essential oil scented candles. This was her first foray into web authoring as well. In the early oughts, after surviving breast cancer, Marcy became interested in skin care and trained as an aesthetician. She opened the Aqua Aesthetics business offering facials and other dermatological treatments. Business declined after the crash of 2008. Thereafter Marcy concentrated on helping care for her grandsons and continuing with her artistic interests although throughout the teens and twenties she was plagued with back issues and declining health. She loved Halloween and loved dressing in her witch's costume to distribute candy. She had a great interest in women's issues and a special affinity for Wicca and the divine feminine. Her spiritual guide for many years, Joanna Kaser, passed away a few years ago.
Marcy is preceded in death by her parents.
Marcy is survived by her husband, Kenneth Freeman; daughter, Melina Velez-Sourlis and her partner, Derek Miranda; daughter, Larissa Sourlis; grandson, Brennen Velez and grandson, Sam Velez and his partner, Lily Bowers.
The family will receive friends Saturday, August 22, 2026, from 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home in Goose Creek with a reception following at their home.
