Mark Steven McCaughan, 55, of Charleston, South Carolina, passed away unexpectedly on April 23, 2026, leaving behind a tremendous void in the hearts of the many people who loved him.
More than anything in this world, Mark loved his daughter, Molly May McCaughan. She was the center of his life, his greatest pride, and the person he cherished most deeply.
Mark was born and raised in Newport News, Virginia. After graduating from Virginia Tech, he built a career spanning more than 30 years in the golf course maintenance and turfgrass industry. He was Superintendent of Bide-A-Wee course for eight years. He then transitioned into sales and consulting, working with Herod Seeds and Harrell's LLC, eventually ending up in the Charleston area to be closer to Molly. He was widely respected by his colleagues for his knowledge, generosity, and calm, easy-going nature.
He enjoyed Virginia Tech athletics, being outdoors, sharing stories over a beer, and creating memories with family and friends. He lived fully, loved deeply, and brought a spirit of kindness and fun into every room he entered.
Mark will be remembered most for his enormous heart and unmistakable zest for life. He was passionate about music, golf, good conversation, and spending time with the people he cared about. Mark’s legacy is one of kindness, loyalty, humor, warmth, and the joy he brought to so many people throughout his life. Though his passing leaves an immeasurable sadness, those who knew and loved him will forever remember his dance moves, his friendship, and the love he shared so freely.
Mark is survived by his daughter Molly May McCaughan; his sister, Patricia Marie McCaughan (Tom) Woodson; and his devoted brothers, Brian (Sherry) McCaughan and Kevin (Terri) McCaughan. He also leaves behind a large extended family of friends, cousins, and colleagues who will forever carry his memory in their hearts. He is preceded in death by his infant son Declan McCaughan and his parents, Marie and Stanley McCaughan.
A Mass celebrating Mark’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 14th at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Newport News, VA. Immediately following the service, family and friends are invited to continue celebrating Mark at Frothy Moon Brewhouse in Williamsburg, Virginia.
