Martha Sue “Susie” Nunn, of Isle of Palms, South Carolina, passed away on August 3, 2026, at the age of 82.

Susie was born on January 8, 1944, in Columbus, Georgia, and grew up in Atlanta and Forest Park, Georgia. She graduated from Forest Park High School in 1962. She met her husband, Gary Franklin Nunn, on a blind date arranged by mutual friends, beginning a devoted marriage that would span more than 61 years. Susie and Gary made their home in several South Carolina communities over the years, moving to Camden in July 1965, Lugoff in 1968, Summerville in 1976, Mount Pleasant in 1996, and Isle of Palms in 1997.

Throughout her life, Susie gave her talents and energy to many roles, including secretary, dental assistant, salesperson, and homemaker. She had a gift for sewing, arts and crafts, decorating, cooking, Garden Club, and hosting, creating kindness and hospitality wherever she went. Susie loved her friends deeply, and her face lit up whenever she was with them. She overflowed with warmth, generosity, and welcome, and was adored by all who gathered around her table. She also had a special love for babies and beamed whenever she held one.

Susie was preceded in death by her father, Luther Lofton Hughes; her mother, Mattie Mae Banks; and her sister, Irma Jean Dougherty.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 61 years, Gary Franklin Nunn; her two sisters, Mary Ellen Corey and Linda Jane Gross; her son, Christopher Neal Nunn (Kim); her daughter, Carey Leigh Jenkins (Perry); and her grandson, Julien Christopher Jenkins.

Service Information

A service will be held at Isle of Palms United Methodist Church in Isle of Palms, South Carolina, on Monday, August 31, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., followed by a celebration of her life with refreshments in the church Fellowship Hall.

Memorial Donations

In 2021, Susie was diagnosed with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus and was successfully treated. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Susie’s memory to the Hydrocephalus Association at https://www.hydroassoc.org/give/
