Mary was born on October 19, 1929, in New York, New York—a week before the stock market crashed—and was the loving daughter of the late Helen Leyden and John Leyden.
She grew up in the five boroughs of New York City, and it was here that she met her beloved husband, John Joseph Shannon. The two were wed in 1954 and quickly began building their lives together. They would remain married for fifty-five years, until John’s death in 2009.
Over the next decade, Mary and John would have five boys. The two realized that their family was growing too big for the cramped confines of New York City, so they decided to move south to Florida in search of greener pastures. There, Mary worked in the clerk’s office of the local court and kept a loving watch over her five boys, who, in her eyes, could do no wrong.
After Mary and John retired, they moved to the Carolinas to be closer to their grandchildren, who Mary doted on by my making malted shakes, her famous spaghetti (the secret is sugar in the sauce), and frequently taking her grandchildren’s side in arguments with their parents.
In her retirement, Mary became a profound crocheter and would spend her free time making booties and hats for babies in the NICU, blankets and shawls for the elderly, and baby blankets for anyone she thought was—or might be at some point—pregnant.
Mary was a dedicated Catholic and regular parishioner of Stella Maris Catholic Church on Sullivan’s Island. Her faith guided her throughout her life. It sustained her and led her through adversity, and, because of it, she is now resting in Paradise. The family anticipates, however, that her rest will be short-lived since she is now reunited with three of her five rambunctious boys, William, John, and James Shannon, who all preceded her in death and who, with her husband, have been eagerly awaiting her arrival.
Mary is survived by her sons Thomas and Robert (Jennifer); her grandchildren Joey (Kelly), Clare (Trace), Kevin, (Meredith), Clint, Cole (Kaylen), Blake, Jason (Anna Gray), Keilah, and Cory; and her great grandchildren Maura, Bridgett, and Lucia (with one more on the way).
The family will celebrate Mary’s funeral mass at 6:00 P.M. on Friday, March 15th, at Stella Maris Catholic Church to be followed by a gathering of friends and family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Stella Maris in Mary’s memory.
